Obituary of Mr. Jason Zhou
April 9, 2021
Jason Zhou, beloved son, and father to a three-year-old daughter passed away on Friday, April 9, 2021, at the age of 38.
Jason was born on February 13, 1983, in Nanchang, China to Xiaohui Zhou and Xiaoling Wu. He grew up in St. Louis Missouri. As a child, he was an avid piano player and he maintained a lifelong love of reading. His remarkable mind was as capable of the analytical as it was of the creative. He attended Yale University and earned a degree in Mathematics and Philosophy. He received his graduate degree in law from the University of Chicago.
Jason was a sensitive soul. In spite of his reserved exterior, he felt every emotion very deeply. He could be brought to tears at the sound of beautiful music or a poignant passage of literature. His love for his daughter was unconditional, and he longed to teach her everything about the world he knew.
Jason was strong and generous. He was a dutiful son, honoring his parents. He was a generous friend, always making himself available when those in his life needed help. He was disciplined, stayed in excellent physical shape, and enjoyed the game of squash. His dream in life was to become a novelist, something he would have excelled at given his extraordinary writing ability and imagination.
Jason is survived by his young daughter, Claire Zhou, and his parents, who will never forget the light their son brought to their life. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 17th at the Greenwich Village Funeral Home at 2 pm.

Jason was an incredibly deep person. I met him in 2012 through a mutual friend who would hold a friendly weekly poker game. Jason was incredibly intelligent and I enjoyed hearing him tell us his elaborate stories which would normally end in the whole table laughing raucously. His poker skills were impressive, I used to always tell him that I never felt that I was going to win when I played heads up against him! Over the years, the more I got to know him, the more I realized his sensitivity and breadth of knowledge and life experience. Just before his passing, Jason was helping me with a legal contract and he was so kind and spent so much time with me on it. I had promised him I owed him dinner for his help and was looking forward to seeing him at our next poker gathering. I am very sad that I won't have the opportunity to see him again. I will remember him fondly and will miss him.

Jason was a good friend for many years. He was kind and funny and had something novel to say about pretty much any topic. He also played a big part in many of my best memories over the last decade, from my bachelor party in the frozen Maine winter, to my wedding in Cambridge (where he had a memorable punting mishap), to the time we spent together both living in London. I have a picture on my desk showing us having a blast at a friend’s birthday party, and that’s how I’ll remember him. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there today to celebrate his life. My deepest condolences to his family for this sad loss.

So shocked to hear this news and my deepest condolences to Jason's families. I had worked with Jason in three firms. He is a very nice partner who listened to young associates and helped us grow. I heard him proud of his family too. He is very low key but very intelligent. I am so sorry that I couldn't know him more ... I am an Asian family in NY too. If there is any help I can do, let me know.

I knew Jason five years ago when he was living in London and I in Scotland. He and I spent a lovely weekend in Madrid which I will always treasure and corresponded for a while after by letter. Jason was shy regarding his handwriting, but it needn't have mattered even if it was the most unintelligible scrawl (it was not) because his words were gorgeous.
Jason and I shared a love of reading, and he gifted me two of his favorite books, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and The Name of the Wind. Jason, 'the brain appears to possess a special area which we might call poetic memory and which records everything that charms or touches us, that makes our lives beautiful'; thank you for making a small part of my life beautiful.

I was saddened to just learn of Jason's passing. I knew him as a client and even from our brief interactions, his love for and dedication to his daughter was one of the first things I noticed about him.
My condolences to Claire and his family.

I was sad to hear this. I remember Jason as kind, intelligent and reserved. Gone far too soon.
