Obituary of Stella Caporale

September 5, 2021

Stella Miriam Babushkin Caporale's lifelong devotion to Public Health was exemplified this year by her frequently expressed frustration (at age 99) that, after decades fighting infectious diseases from polio to TB, her now stiff fingers prevented her from answering the call for retired nurses to help administer vaccines to protect against SARS-CoV2.

BS-RN 1943 from Bellevue School of Nursing and Teachers' College Columbia in Public Health; long career with the New York Department of Health, including as a Visiting Nurse (climbing across rooftops on the Lower East Side), a school nurse, and in clinics in Ocean Hill-Brownsville.

Welcoming, insightful, keen intellect, devoted, generous, compassionate, perceptive, calming, deeply empathetic, could never understand why a person would harm another person. "I'm the richest girl on earth with my family, my home and my memories".

Mom: you gave us and the world 99 years, yet we kept pleading for more.

Rest in Peace with Dad.

We remember the infectious smile, the generousness of opening her place to Sidarth and me when we were struggling to find a place in NYC. The Thanksgiving dinners at her place. The wisdom and knowledge of politics and everything in the country and the city she lived that she cared about. Above all she is a people person - a caring loving mom, friend and grandma. I want to thank god for allowing us to be a small part of her life. RIP Stella.

Jay, Shanthi & Sidarth
