Obituary of Stephane A. Crapanzano

December 1, 2023

In Loving Memory of Stéphane It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Stéphane, a beloved husband, father, son, brother, friend, and colleague. He left us on Friday, December 1st, 2023, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. Despite the medical challenges he faced, Stéphane's unwavering positivity and light-hearted spirit remained a beacon of hope and inspiration for all who knew him.

Stéphane was born in 1981 in Moulins, France, and moved to the beautiful South of France when he was about a year old. His academic journey led him to the prestigious École Normale Supérieure (ÉNS) de Cachan, where he confirmed his exceptional mathematical abilities by passing the "Agrégation de Mathématiques". He further honed his skills by completing the “DEA El-Karoui”, setting a strong foundation for his future career.

Stéphane's passion for numbers and problem-solving guided his successful career as an Equity Vol Quant, a journey that would take him across continents, starting in Paris and ending in New York, punctuated by a few transformative years in Hong Kong. As the Global Head of the Equity Core Quant Strats team and a Managing Director at Goldman Sachs, he applied his technical excellence to develop innovative models and infrastructure, which are now at the foundation of pricing and risk management for global equity derivatives businesses. His significant contributions to the field and to Goldman Sachs' success over the years were remarkable, and his innovative approach will continue to influence the industry for years to come.

Stéphane's professional accomplishments were many, but it was his personal qualities that truly set him apart. His infectious laughter, quick wit, thirst for knowledge, unwavering optimism, and his ability to find happiness in the simplest of things made him a delight to be around. He was a humble and courageous leader, who mentored many of his colleagues and inspired everyone around him through his dedication and commitment to excellence. His presence will be deeply missed.

Stéphane is survived by his loving wife, Hanqing, and their adorable 5-year-old son, Léo. His love for his family was evident in everything he did. He was a devoted husband and a doting father, always prioritizing their needs above his own. His love and dedication to his family will forever be his legacy.

As we mourn the loss of Stéphane, we also celebrate his life, his achievements, and the joy he brought into our lives. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his memory will continue to inspire us to live our lives with positivity, courage, and love.
