Obituary of Mariano P. Abbariao, Jr.

October 16, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce that our beloved husband/father/grandfather/brother Mariano P. Abbariao, Jr., (81), of New York City, New York, passed away peacefully in his home on October 16th, 2023.

Mariano, lovingly known as “Jun”, was born to Mariano, Sr. and Amparo Purificacion Abbariao on March 10th, 1942 in Enrile, Philippines (Cagayan Valley).  He attended the National University of the Philippines and obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He initially worked throughout Asia then emigrated to the United States in 1970 and settled in New York.  In 1971, he married his childhood sweetheart Zenaida Pattugalan.

Mariano held many titles in his life, from an artist to a mechanical engineer.  However, his favorite role was being a father, grandfather and husband.  He loved nothing more than to be with his family and sacrificed his personal gain for the gain of others.

In addition to being a family man, Mariano was a devout Catholic and loved God very much.  Not only has he served as an usher during the mass services, but he consistently supported events such as the Devotion to our Mother of Perpetual Help (30 years) and the Misa de Gallo at Immaculate Conception Church (31 years).  Mariano also achieved the rank of “Grand Knight” & "Faithful Navigator" within the Knights of Columbus.  He was also a member of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternal order and the Boy Scouts of the Philippines.

Mariano is survived by his wife Zenaida, three children, Janice, Jens, and Jay, their spouses Robert Mullowney, Mary Aragon, and Janelle Gonzales, along with three grandchildren, Mason, Dylan, and Makenna.  He and Zenaida also had another daughter, June Anne, who sorrowfully passed away two months after she was born in 1978.

Mariano’s family will host a wake service on Thursday, October 26th, 2023 at 2:00pm at Greenwich Village Funeral Home (DeLuca) in New York.  A subsequent viewing will be conducted on Friday, October 27th, 2023 at the Immaculate Conception Church in New York at 9:00am, then followed by the funeral services at 10:00am.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to either the Wounded Warrior Project (https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org) or the Trisomy 18 Foundation (https://trisomy18.org/ways-to-give/) in Mariano’s name.
