Obituary of Christopher J. Tobin

December 19, 2020

A native New Yorker, Christopher J. Tobin developed a keen interest in broadcast engineering as a teenager while working at Radio Shack. Only a few years later, he was working at ABC Radio Network, WBAB, Westwood One, CBS Radio (1010 WINS/WNEW 102.7FM), CCS/Musicam USA and Jazz 88 WBGO in Newark, NJ. One of his greatest passions in life was also co-hosting TWIRT ("This Week in Radio Tech") with Kirk Harnack for 11 years.

While serving as Chief Technology Officer at WBGO, Chris also became a prolific videographer and photographer, filming some of the greatest jazz artists of our time. He was also a longstanding member of SBE (Society of Broadcast Engineers), and IBEW. He was famous for always answering his phone and ready to help anyone on the other end of the call.

On various occasions, Chris presented at the CCBS (Central Canada Broadcast Engineering) conference and authored several white papers about AoIP (audio over IP) and live remotes.

Chris is survived by Lisa, his mother, Beatrice, and brother, David. He will be missed by many, but never forgotten.

Viewings will be held Sunday, January 3, 2021 at Perazzo Funeral Home at 199 Bleecker Street at 6th Avenue from 2-5pm and 7-9pm.
