Obituary of Barbara North

Barbara North, the beloved "Mayor" of 100 Sullivan Street, passed away on September 13, 2026 at the age of 77. For decades, she looked after every person and every dog in our little community.

The oldest of three, Barbara grew up on Long Island and came to the city in 1978, settling on Sullivan Street, which became her home for the remainder of her life. In 1985, she joined NYSA-ILA, where she worked for more than 40 years. She was always learning. She loved languages, loved her neighborhood, and gave her time to the parish council at the Church of St. Anthony of Padua.

Barbara was small but mighty, never afraid to speak her mind, with a wonderful laugh and a smile for (almost) everyone. The smell of her cooking often drifted out of her apartment and made the whole floor hungry. No walk was too long for her, and most mornings she was out early, headed to Citarella before the rest of the street woke up. She would frequently get lost in a good book and then pass it along to a friend. And she likely held the world record for watching Ben-Hur.

She is survived by her sister, Mary, her dear friend Cheryl, and a street full of neighbors who miss her dearly, including the dogs, who continue to stop at her door every day looking for treats and a pet.
