Obituary of Tia Denise Oliver

There are some souls whose presence is so steady, so comforting, and so deeply woven into the lives of those around them that their absence leaves an unmistakable silence. Tia Denise Oliver was one of those rare souls. Tia’s sun rose on September 26,1957 in Brooklyn, New York with adoring parents, the late Lucille Oliver Martin and James “ Jimmy” Oliver. Tia was a special daughter and sister who was always there for her family. Her sun set on July 25, 2026. 

Tia grew up in Lawrenceville, VA and graduated in the class of 1975 from Brunswick Senior High School. She attended Hampton University and later made her way back to New York to work at Brooklyn Cumberland Hospital. Seeking greater opportunities, Tia joined the Navy following a family tradition to serve in the military. As a civilian, Tia found her passion as a life coach and mentor. She staffed and supported leadership trainings for several organizations and provided relationship and recovery coaching services during the COVID pandemic. 

 To those who knew her as Momma Tia, she was kind, gentle, and a soft landing in a world that could often feel hard and uncertain. She possessed a quiet strength that never demanded attention, yet everyone felt its power. Fierce in her convictions and unwavering in her love, Tia had a remarkable ability to speak with clarity through the chatter and static of life. When confusion clouded the way, her wisdom and calm presence helped others find their footing.

As Auntie Tia, she greeted life with a glowing smile and an optimistic spirit that brightened every room she entered. She believed wholeheartedly in the children of her family, seeing potential where others saw limitations. To each child, she offered encouragement, confidence, and unconditional support. She believed they could do anything, and because she believed in them, they learned to believe in themselves. Whether nurturing a dream, celebrating a talent, or simply listening with an open heart, she made every child feel seen, valued, and capable of greatness.

Tia's love extended beyond her family to the world around her. She cared deeply about the future and the generations yet to come. In her own thoughtful way, she took a stand to protect the planet, believing that stewardship of the earth was a responsibility shared by all. Her commitment reflected the same hope and care that she poured into the lives of those she loved.

What made Tia extraordinary was not grand gestures or public acclaim. It was the way she lived each day: with compassion, grace, conviction, and purpose. She showed us that kindness is a strength, that gentleness can coexist with resolve, and that a life devoted to uplifting others leaves a legacy that endures.

Tia leaves to mourn: Jennifer Martin (sister), Julie Oliver (sister), Lynn Harknett Turner (sister), Steven Walker (uncle), Jayden Martin (nephew), Jason Duncan (nephew), Kevin  Duncan (brother-in law), a host of cousins in Maryland and Virginia, classmates Fred Vaughan and Bertrand Morton, kind neighbors and many dear friends.

 Though we mourn her passing, we celebrate the countless ways she touched our lives as a reflection of God’s love. We carry forward her lessons, her laughter, her encouragement, and the enduring belief that each of us can make a difference. Her spirit lives on in the family she cherished, the people she inspired, and the lives she helped shape.

Tia's light was never meant for a single moment. It shines on in all who were fortunate enough to be loved by her.
