Obituary of Mr. John Alan Ireland

May 3, 2021

Mr. Ireland is survived by his beloved wife, Mary P. Ireland, PhD, RN (died May 2, 2025) and
stepdaughter, Laura Lutton Pollard and son-in-law Justice Pollard of Portland, Maine. Marguerite
Lutton, his other stepdaughter, and Laura's sister, preceded him and Mary in death.

John (also known to friends as Jocko) was born and raised in the Bronx, NYC. He saw the span of
many decades and change in NYC. His family immigrated from Scotland to NYC via Ellis Island at
the turn of the century. They settled and made home in the Bronx. When asked by his stepdaughter
how his parents met, he said, “the story is, that they met at a dance at a local Scottish club in the
Bronx, NYC.) His mother worked as a chambermaid on the island of Guernsey, in the UK, and
sought a better life in America. Mr. Ireland worked side-by-side in the building and trades business
with his father — their company was called Energy Electric. Energy Electric is responsible for the
lighting and electrical work that was originally installed when the esteemed Rockefeller Center was
being built in 1938.

Mr. Ireland served abroad in the military after World War II, in what was called, “occupation
Japan”. He went on to obtain his degree at New York City’s historic art and science institution, The
Cooper Union. He was creative and continued to draw and create art throughout his adult life. He
was an avid golfer (taught by his father) and frequented the historic Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course
and Mosholu Golf Course throughout his life. He has the success of a “Hole in One” on his golf
sporting record!

In 1988, Mr. Ireland married and spent the remaining 33 years of his life with his beloved Mary.
John and Mary found joy in travel and in the culture of New York City, as well as quiet summers at
their Catskills home. He was a kind and thoughtful man, and proud of his Scottish heritage
