Obituary of James Gerard Haley, Jr.

April 26, 2026

James G. Haley, Jr.

James Gerard Haley, Jr. passed away peacefully on April 26, 2026, at the age of 71. He faced a long health battle with immense courage, a constant smile, very few complaints, and true to form, plenty of special requests and instructions. He was never shy about requesting his favorites, especially Chinese food or a good bowl of pasta with sausage.

Born in New York City on April 18, 1955, Jimmy was raised alongside his siblings on the Lower East Side of Manhattan by his loving parents, James and Agnes Haley. He remained a fixture of the Lower East Side, especially his beloved Grand Street, until his final day.

In 1983, Jimmy joined the New York City Police Department, beginning a distinguished 20-year career. He rose to the rank of Detective, serving in several precincts, including the 13th and 10th. His most impactful service came toward the end of his career in the Major Case Squad. Following the events of 9/11, Jimmy played a vital role in forensic identification and recovery operations. He was ultimately honored with an award for exemplary service for helping establish order amid the devastation at the World Trade Center, a testament to his steady hand and unwavering dedication to his city.

In addition to his home on Grand Street, Jimmy’s heart belonged to Bradley Beach, New Jersey. He spent his summers there swimming (or more accurately, floating) past the jetty, working tirelessly toward his goal of becoming the “tannest Irishman,” cooking at all hours of the day, and making daily morning (and sometimes afternoon and evening) runs to the bakery. In fact, there wasn’t a bakery in the tri-state area that Jimmy hadn’t visited, an achievement many friends and family can happily confirm.

Jimmy was always impeccably dressed, with an outfit ready for every occasion. He could famously out-shop even his daughter and nieces during their teenage years. Beyond fashion, Jimmy had a passion for cars, boats, and the latest gadgets. He became well known for owning multiple cars in New York City, though he often fell victim to alternate side of the street parking rules.

Quick-witted and endlessly playful, Jimmy had a nickname for everyone. He affectionately called his daughter “Kristioni Minestrone” and delighted family and friends with the funny names he invented on the spot, always aiming to get a laugh.

Jimmy’s greatest joy was his family. He was the cherished father of Kristin Haley Sengsourinh and father-in-law to Matt Sengsourinh (known to him simply as “Matthews”). He is also survived by his brother Robert Haley; sister-in-law Monica Haley; sister Corrine Apostolico; nieces Shaina, Britta Mae, and Alexsandra; and nephew Dean; and his loving companion, Kathleen Sancimino.

He was a beloved father, brother, uncle, cousin, and a genuine friend to all. Those lucky enough to know him experienced the true warmth of his kindness. Whenever anyone asked how he was doing, his answer was almost always the same: he was simply “chillaxin.”

Jimmy is now reunited in heaven with his parents, brothers Billy and John;  grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who went before him, and it’s easy to imagine the joyful reunion he stepped into, filled with laughter, big hugs, and a celebration that only Jimmy could inspire.

Jimmy lived life on his own terms, with a full heart and a smile on his face, leaving a trail of laughter and light behind him. While our hearts are broken and he will be deeply missed, the memories he gave us will remain with us always.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation  in loving memory of NYPD Retired Detective James G. Haley, Jr.
