Obituary of Barry Gordin

May 28, 2025

With deep sorrow, we share the passing of Barry Gordin, who died on May 28 from respiratory failure due to complications of ALS.

Barry was a beloved and vibrant presence in New York’s cultural and artistic circles. A longtime resident of the city, he was the founder and owner of Barry Gordin Hair Design, a boutique salon nestled on Morton Street in the West Village, just steps from Bleecker Street. For many, Barry was not only a gifted stylist but also a trusted confidant and a source of joy and inspiration.

Beyond his work in hair design, Barry was a passionate supporter of the theater. As editor-in-chief of Theaterlife.com, he championed the stage with dedication and flair, covering productions on Broadway and in the Hamptons with insightful reviews and interviews.

A gifted photographer and a regular presence at openings, galas, and benefits, Barry brought a distinctive eye and enduring enthusiasm to his documentation of cultural life in both New York and the Hamptons. His regular column, "Gordin’s View", in Dan’s Papers offered readers a lively window into the people and performances that moved him most.

Barry shared his life with his loving partner of 42 and a half years, Patrick Christiano. The two were married on the roof garden of Stewart Hall on July 15, 2015. Together, they formed a creative and devoted partnership—both personal and professional.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, June 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Greenwich Village Funeral Home, 199 Bleecker Street. A funeral service will follow on Monday in East Hampton, where Barry found joy and community for many years.

Barry will be remembered for his artistry, warmth, wit, and unwavering love for the theater and those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of beauty, generosity, and enduring friendship.
