Obituary of Antonia Carrion
February 24, 2025
On February 24, 2025, Antonia (Toñita) Carrión passed away at New York Presbyterian Hospital - Lower Manhattan. Born on January 17, 1939, in Caguas, Puerto Rico, she was predeceased by her parents, Dolores (Lola) Rodriguez and Martin Díaz. Toñita spent the first part of her life in Puerto Rico before moving to New York City to live with her
Aunt Gladys and Uncle Ramón in Manhattan.
A devoted mother, Toñita always went above and beyond to ensure her four children had everything they needed, loving them unconditionally. She is survived by her children: Carmen, Felix Jr. (Dannette), Ruth, and José (Christopher); her grandchildren:Lucas (Meadow) and Aaron (Haley) Carrión, Joseph (Kai) and Aro Malave, and Jadin
Talavera; her precious great-granddaughter, Savannah; her sisters, María Antonia and Carmen; and her brother, Pablo, with whom she spent most of her life, celebrating nearly every holiday and milestone together as one united family. She is also survived by Pablo's children: Pablo Ruben (Elba, Christine, Taun, and Paul), Sandra (Raquel), and Orlando (Margherita, Dito, Leah, Sabrina, Jessica, and Cooper). Toñita was predeceased by her much-loved husband, Felix Carrión; her beloved grandchildren, Christopher and Jared Talavera, who will always hold a special place in her heart, and her deeply cherished sister-in-law, María (Toñita) Díaz.
To know Toñita was to experience her deep love and commitment to God, expressed through her hands-on service, unconditional love, warmth, and compassion. She embraced her family, her church family, and her community with open arms and an open home. While there are too many to name, she was known for her advocacy and as a dedicated PTA president and member during her children’s school years, as well as a passionate supporter of the Primitive Christian Church. Toñita served as a deacon, worked as a fundraiser to help rebuild and grow the church, and led the girls' ministry (Las Misioneritas). She also served as president and member of the Ladies' Organization
(Sociedad de Damas) and led the Home Ministry, visiting and praying for the sick weekly with her treasured sisters in Christ, many of whom became her lifelong best friends.
As a predominantly Spanish-speaking New Yorker, Toñita was never intimidated by language barriers and always found ways to love and serve her family and community. As her children grew older, she entered the workforce as a home attendant. Alongside her husband, Felix, they worked tirelessly to create a loving, supportive, and safe environment, unlocking countless opportunities for their four children. Her children will always take pride in and remember their Mami as a fearless, hardworking woman with a love for laughter, an innocent prankster, and a joyful sense of humor. She was not only a mother but also a grandmother, an aunt, and a reliable friend to many. Toñita taught countless children how to ride bicycles, take their first steps, play sports, and enjoy life to the fullest. Her home was always filled with her children’s friends, who were warmly welcomed and truly loved as part of her extended family.
Toñita was also known for being an amazing cook, selflessly sharing her recipes, many of which have been passed down and enjoyed to this day. Her dishes remain a cherished reminder of her nurturing spirit. To all of her nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and friends who shared in her journey and were present, your unwavering assistance and love will always be held dear. From the heavens, Toñita wants to express her heartfelt gratitude for the countless hours and daily support you gave to her children during this challenging yet beautiful time of her transition to be with her beloved husband, Felix.
As a fervent and humble servant of God, if there is one thing Toñita would want you to know about her, it is that she took great pride in being a woman first, followed by being a mother and wife. She lived a life beyond her years, embodying values and strength that we can all aspire to.
