Marion Huang Yeh 1930-2024
Yeh, Marion Huang, born Feb. 9, 1930, passed on Aug 3, 2024 in New York City. She was the beloved widow of Samuel D. J. Yeh, and the daughter of T. L. Huang, dean of the National Defense Dental School and Shiao Mei Huang, granddaughter of Duanfang, Viceroy of Liangjiang and the founder of Jinan University, Guangzhou province.
Born in Tientsin, China, Marion experienced displacement during the Second World War when her family moved from a series of homes in Nanjing, Luoyang, Chengdu and Shanghai where she attended a boarding school run by Canadian Catholic nuns. Marion and Sam had a ten year courtship that culminated in marriage in Baltimore, 1959. Two years later, they moved to New York City. After living on the East Side for forty years, Marion and Sam moved to Morningside Gardens.
Marion had a brief stint teaching Chinese when she first arrived in the US. She was a proud union member: she filed x-rays for HIP after Phoebe completed elementary school. She was an accomplished cook of traditional Chinese cuisine but could also make perfectly round pancakes. An expert knitter of Barbie doll clothes, scarves galore and sweaters, she also made matching dresses for her daughters and niece and duvet covers, usually without any sewing patterns. Her reading taste ranged from the Anne of Green Gables books and Jane Eyre to novels by Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer.
Marion had a green thumb and supervised over flower arrangements meticulously. She was determined to attend the college graduation of each grandchild, most recently ten weeks before she passed.
She is survived by her daughters Vivian Wen-Han Yeh of Doylestown, PA and Phoebe Wen-Chan Yeh of New York City, son-in-laws Brendan Greer of Doylestown, PA and Richard Manzi of New York City; and three grandchildren, Sam Yeh Manzi, Aidan Li Ping Greer and Nora Li Dan Greer.
