Obituary of Edith Schell Rubin

November 14, 2023

On November 14, 2023, Edith Rubin, beloved wife, sister, aunt and friend, passed away in her sleep while in hospice care at Mt. Sinai West hospital.

Edith was born and raised on Staten Island.  She graduated from Curtis High School on Staten Island and then graduated from Hunter College in 1965.

Edith worked first for the New York City Bureau of Child Welfare and then became a City of New York probation officer. She rose through the ranks which was, at the time, very difficult for a woman to do and retired as the Assistant Commissioner for The Bronx County Adult Probation Services.

Edith was a strong, passionate woman, devoted to her family and friends. She also possessed a truly great creative talent. She loved both sketching and painting watercolors. She was also a quiltmaker. But her artistic creativity really came out in her jewelry making.  She participated in many craft fairs, often selling out her jewelry.

Edith had a love of travel and traveled extensively. She loved long road trips and Caribbean cruises.

She is survived by her husband Ira, sister Frances and brother William.

In lieu of flowers please make a contribution to the American Leukemia Society.
