Obituary of Alain Rozan

September 10, 2022

Alain Rozan, died at his home in Manhattan on September 10, 2022, at the age of 64, and leaves behind a large family and circle of friends in his native France whom he adored and who adored him. He also leaves behind a loving community of New York friends, musical collaborators, and colleagues from Cravath, Swaine & Moore, NYU Law School, and the French-American business community. Alain moved to New York City in 1981 as a young law student. He immediately fell in love with the city, later becoming an American citizen and making it his permanent home. Those who knew him admired his steadfastness, his extraordinary generosity, his wry wit, keen political engagement, French-American law acumen, and, above all, his passion for songwriting and performing. He was an accomplished singer-songwriter heavily influenced by Jacques Brel, Bob Dylan, and Carl Perkins among others. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of music and an adeptness for writing in either his adopted American vernacular or his native French. Also, there wasn't a cream-based dessert he didn't love, and there wasn't a friend who didn't love to enjoy a long, delicious meal in his company.
